The Tyler does not necessarily have to be a member of a Lodge to occupy the Office. In fact in earlier times a Tyler was a ‘Professional’ Tyler who acted on behalf of many Lodges. If he is not a member of the Lodge, he would be elected annually by the brethren of the Lodge, however if he is a member of the Lodge he will be appointed by the Worshipful Master in the same way as all other Officers are appointed apart from the Treasurer who is elected annually.

His duties are to keep off all Intruders and Cowans to Freemasonry and suffer none to pass but those who are duly qualified. From a practical point of view, his duties also include the preparation of Candidates, to give proper reports on the door of the Lodge when candidates, members or visitors require admission to the Lodge.

The job of the Tyler requires that he stands outside the door of the Lodge, understandably, that does not always suit the brethren, however some do enjoy that role and will act as the Tyler for many years.
