W. Bro P G Guise
W. Bro Peter Graham Guise was born way back in the year of or Lord nineteen hundred and fifty-five in Canterbury, Kent. He is, therefore, a Man of Kent, and hasn’t strayed that far since. Married to Julie, with a now adult daughter, Charlotte Victoria Anne, he spent thirty-three years in public service. Peter presented himself at Somerset House on the 11th of September 1972 for his first appointment with Her Majesty’s Civil Service and would go on to serve in a management capacity in the National Health Service and in Local Government before jumping at the chance to take early retirement at the tender age of 52 to turn a hobby into a second career as a freelance sports broadcaster. Peter had a busy schedule as a result, mostly for the BBC, but also for a number of independent local radio stations. As well as commentating live from every Test cricket ground in the UK he also commentated at both the old and the new Wembley for FA Vase Finals.
Peter was initiated into Freemasonry on the 12th January 2013 in the Septem Lodge 7788 and discovered a passion for learning and delivering ritual with the emphasis on delivery, probably as a result of having been a broadcaster. He was passed on the 23rd September 2013 and raised to the 3rd Degree on the 25th April 2014 as a courtesy working for the Septem Lodge, by the Shorncliffe Lodge No:4330 Peter achieved the Chair as Worshipful Master in May 2021 and after a year as the immediate past master, has recently taken on the role of Secretary in May 2023.
Now having fully retired, he volunteers at his local Community Radio station in Herne Bay, Cabin FM, as a presenter and producer of local interest programmes including news and sport. He received an award at the 2018 Community Radio Awards in the Speech and Journalism category for his programme on the opening of the new Herne Community Centre. He holds a lifetime interest in old railways and has written two books on defunct lines, The Elham Valley Line and the Crab & Winkle Line in his Railway Remnants series and has plans for more. Both are available via Amazon by the way!
Peter is also the administrative arm for Herne Bay FC’s Women’s Section having been with them from their formation in 2012. They have won a trophy a season since then and the first team now play just two divisions below the national women’s structure. There is also a development team and an associated girls structure with teams ranging from under 8’s to under 16’s. Adult football for Women starts at 16. Peter’s aim is to get the first team into the National structure before his 70th birthday so there’s only four seasons to go to achieve that!
